"Es Secret" - Cala Deià

House by the sea with a backdrop of mountains, nature and tranquility with a hiking trail nearby

4 bedrooms / 2 + 1 bathrooms / 200m2 living area / 2000m2 terrace area
location: Cala Deià

Our house is secret. It is situated in la cala de deia, 1 minute from the sea down a private path. We constructed the house ourselves in 2001. It is called “secret” because there is a little cave where in the past smugglers hid their contraband and where the first silent film in mallorca was filmed. The land used to belong to the archduke luis salvador of austria, cousin of queen sisi.

The land around the house consists of a 2,150m2 plot separated from the “Sa Pradisa” farm which used to belong to the Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria. The plot is adjacent to the La Cala seafront and there is a private path with direct access to the bay, a minute away on foot from the house. There are large smooth rocks to one side of the house where an excavation has created a small cave called “Es Secret de Sa Pradisa” (The Secret of Pradisa). At the beginning of the 20th century the first Mallorcan silent film by the same name was filmed there. In times gone by the cave was used to hide smugglers' contraband.

The house is 200m2 in area, with a roofed terrace of some 36m2. It enjoys magnificent views of La Cala, the sea and the mountains. There is a 20m2 verandah at the entrance, a garden pergola of around 50m2, terraces with fruit trees and an area of virgin Mediterranean land. On the ground floor there are 4 double junior suite bedrooms with built-in wardrobes (2´5 x 2´5) and two full double bathrooms, one of them en-suite. On the upper floor there is a 40 m2 sitting / dining room, a toilet, a kitchen of around 17m2, a laundry room of about 60m2 and a roofed terrace of some 36m2. Heating throughout the house.

The walls of the house are some 57cm thick and are built of 20cm ceramic brick, thermal insulation, 10cm ceramic brick and hand cut stone facing about 22cm thick. There is no air conditioning. However the rear and both sides of the house are built into the rock, minimising the visual impact and at the same time creating a cave effect such that the temperature on the ground floor remains virtually constant throughout the year and is very pleasant in the summer. The ceiling on the upper floor is made of ceiling bricks and small African teak beams about 7m long. The internal and external woodwork is comprised of African caoba. All the flooring in the house is solid chestnut laid on battens. The internal staircases are made of hand cut Mallorcan stone and the stone in the windows was excavated by us and sent to be cut and polished. The kitchen is fully equipped with a Miele fridge and dishwasher, worktop and Teka oven, a Siemens washing machine and an extra fridge. The kitchen table is made from solid holm oak from our Son Sitjes estate and designed by us. The dining room has a table made from solid pear wood which was also designed by us, an 18th century chest of drawers decorated with marquetry, rattan sofas and an olive wood table designed by us. The room is decorated with paintings from Bali and Mallorca, together with African decoration with antique tapestries from North Africa. There is a TV. (Astra international satellite) and CD player, internet access and a Yamaha piano exclusively for people who can prove their academic ability in piano playing. Two of the bedrooms have double beds, one of modern Roche-Bobois design and the other made of Cuban caoba dating from the middle of the 19th century. The other two bedrooms have a single bed with a pull-out bed. The roofed terrace has four 30 x 30 solid, hand cut stone columns which support the chestnut beams and the ceiling made from ceiling bricks and chestnut boards. The floor is made of small stones from the river and the furniture is sustainably sourced teak. It consists of a sofa and dining table. The pergola has sustainably sourced wooden furniture, comprising a bench, a sofa, two arm chairs, chairs and an iron table with Moroccan tiles.

La Cala is a bay with a beach of large grains of sand, round stones and boulders from the river which at its mouth flows swiftly and abundantly for 9 months a year. In the bay there are two restaurants. One is a family restaurant the kitchen of which is situated in a cave. This has a magnificent terrace in the bathing area. The other specialises in fish and in the summer opens at night. It is situated between the little jetty-houses. Both restaurants are reminiscent of 19th century Mallorca.

Information about Cala Deià location

Cala Deià is a bay two km. from the town of Deià, situated in the Sierra de Tramuntana de Mallorca (Mallorca's Tramuntana mountain range). It is surrounded by 800 and 900 metre high mountains, crowned by the Teix mountain which is over 1000 metres high. The best hiking routes in Mallorca with magnificent, marvellous views start in Cala Deià.

In Deià places to eat include the local bar with its magnificent terrace, a pub with live music on its terrace, a tapas restaurant and a restaurant with a Michelin star. There are banks, a newspaper kiosk, a museum, a bakery with a small supermarket and a good wine merchant.

Both the town and La Cala have captivated Richard Branson, who was the owner of the hotel La Residencia. This hotel has provided accommodation in the past for such notable guests as Princess Diana of Wales, Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria, Elisabetta Amalia Eugenia von Wittelsbach Empress of Austria, “Sisi”, Manuel de Falla, painters such as Rusinyol, Ulrich Leman, Picasso, Sheridan, poets and writers such as Laura Riding, Anais Nin, Robert Graves whose foundation Ca´n Alluny you can visit, designers such as Sibilla, and international musicians such as The Cors and Bob Geldof. Some have their own houses or spend long periods here. Some famous visitors from the past are even buried in the town cemetery such as Robert Graves, Sheridan, William Waldren, Ulrich Leman, and Frederic Grunfeld, amongst others.

Deià has kept its free spirit intact, maintaining its bohemian, hippy spirit mixed with millionaires and businessmen. It has preserved a way of life that is without complexes or prejudices and is both natural and discreet.

Deià has very good transport connections, it is situated:

  • 35 minutes from the airport
  • 35 minutes from Palma
  • 10 km from Soller, an Africanised town of interest with a substantial modernist influence. The façade of its church is the work of one of Gaudi's disciples. It has a 19th century wooden train that connects with Palma and a tram from the same period that connects with Puerto de Soller. Both the town of Soller and Soller port have all services, including some of five star quality.
  • 10km from Valldemosa, a beautiful town which has known how to maintain its charm despite the great daily flux of tourists. There is a family run traditional restaurant in the modest Can Marió hotel in an unbeatable setting which will transport you back to the beginning of the 20th century.
  • 25 minutes from Port des Canonge, on the Sierra de Tramuntana coast, a small built up area with a virgin bay with little fishermen's houses, almost on the sea shore, with easily accessible, unspoilt surroundings. It is the oldest geological area of Mallorca. There are two restaurants.
  • 30 minutes from Banalbufar,a small town on the Sierra de Tramuntana coast. There is a bay with a small port and in the bay there is a natural spring in which you can shower or refresh yourself. The port has several restaurants.
  • 40 minutes from Estallencs, a small, welcoming town on the Sierra de Tramuntana coast. It also has a bay with a small port with a spring but it is best to approach it on foot as the road is very narrow. There is an excellent restaurant in the square.
  • 45 minutes from Cala Tuent, an excellent, virgin bay in the foothills of the highest mountains in Mallorca. There are no services apart from a quite decent restaurant in a fantastic setting.
